Sciatica Nerve Pain
Sciatica
Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back through your hips and buttocks and down each leg. It typically affects only one side of your body.
Causes
Sciatica most commonly occurs when a herniated disk, bone spur on the spine, or narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) compresses part of the nerve. This causes inflammation, pain, and often some numbness in the affected leg.
Symptom
Symptoms of sciatica can vary widely and may include:
- Pain in the lower back or buttock that radiates down the back of the thigh and into the leg.
- Numbness or weakness in the affected leg or foot.
- Tingling sensation (“pins and needles”) in the leg or foot.
- Burning or shooting pain that makes it difficult to stand up or walk.
Treatment
Treatment for sciatica depends on the underlying cause and the severity of symptoms. It may include:
- Pain relief medications such as over-the-counter pain relievers (e.g., ibuprofen, acetaminophen) or prescription medications for more severe pain.
- Physical therapy to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and correct posture.
- Hot or cold packs applied to the affected area to help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain.
- Epidural steroid injections to reduce inflammation around the compressed nerve.
- Surgery may be considered if symptoms are severe and do not respond to other treatments, or if there is a significant underlying issue such as a herniated disk.
It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan for sciatica. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific symptoms and medical history.
